Fire Industry Leadership in the Age of Disruption
All industries face it at some point…disruption. Anything can change an industry. You may think your industry is safe, but when you don’t look into the future and see what’s coming, and when you don’t constantly innovate, you risk the chance of being blind-sided. How will autonomous vehicles change the fire industry? How does the economy change the way potential employees see firefighting as a career? How do government regulations change the way the fire stations do business? How will drones make firefighting less dangerous? 75% of fire fighters in Southeastern Michigan are a combination of volunteer and paid on call firefighters. A lot of the task of retaining good quality people lies with management, who are facing more and more levels of disruption every day.
Like all industries, the fire industry can't just keep doing things "the way it's always been done". Change means looking at new ways to do business, whether it's new ways of recruiting, new ways of training, or new and better ways of maintaining a fire station.
Julie Austin's speech will get fire chiefs thinking in a more innovative way to solve some of the new problems they now face. This also includes new innovations in the fire industry and how they will change and improve the way fire chiefs do business. This is combined with her small town experiences growing up as the daughter of the local sheriff, who often had to work with local fire officials to keep the community safe.
Julie Austin is an award-winning author, inventor, futurist, innovation speaker, and member ofthe World Future Society. She’s an internationally known thought leader on the topic ofinnovation, and CEO of the consulting firm Creative Innovation Group.
